Santiago to Ushuaia by bike

Lesson learned 1, 2 & 3

From time to time I will write under this title a few things which I learned during this trip and which are maybe also helpful for other ones to avoid to make the same mistakes :-). Lesson learned 1: Exchange before a longer trip all parts which are heavily used. And really all. Do not think that this one little thing will keep a bit longer. It won’t. It will fail on the first few kilometers (or miles) and frustrate […]

The weather

I shouldnt complain too much because the first two or three weeks in Chile I was really lucky and it was more or less sunny the whole time. However, since I left Puerto Montt this has changed. First we had two days of storm and heavy rain. After this there was one day which was more or less okay and let me move to Villa Santa Lucia. However, after this rain started again and forced me to stay in Santa […]

Chaiten is alive!

Just a short update with some information in case somebody else is planning on visiting Chaiten. Despite that the government has decided to abandon the city, some of the inhabitants do not want to give up their town. There is no electricity, running water, fixed line telephones nor Internet available in town but several supermercatos and accomodations are open and available to serve you. And by visiting the town and using those facilities you can help the people of Chaiten. […]

Salmon

On the way to the campsite in Panitao, I also saw on the street in form of fish heads and tails, where this smell was coming from: Salmon or it left overs. The area south of Puerto Montt including the island of Chiloe is the Salmon-Eldorado of Chile. Or maybe I should say, it was. […]

It’s getting better again

First the bad news: I couldn’t take the ferry on Friday evening. But there is some good news too: after two days with only two pieces of white bread, two bananas, 2 litres of isotonic drinks and a half litre of orange juice, I’m doing better again. Not yet complettely healthy but at least can keep the food so far without having stomach ache… And this especially because of the appropriate medication and professional remote medicin :-). Because I do […]

Stomach issues

It was actually the plan to take the ferry today from Quellon to Chaiten. However, this is not going to happen. Major stomach issue force me to change plans again. I will stay in Quellon till my stomach is stable again and will then go by bus back to Puerto Montt to take the ferry from there to Chaiten. I hope this is going to happen on Monday. Natasha Young wrote in here blog that Puerto Montt is one of […]
